Attending networking events is a great way to make connections, but yes, they are often aimed towards working professionals, and it might be hard for a young college student to interact when he/she has no prior experience.
The best way to start building a network at this point would be to join any real estate clubs on campus and to join organizations like the Urban Land Institute’s Young Leaders program: https://americas.uli.org/councils/district-councils/get-involved/young-leaders-group-ylg/
Another great way to form relationships is to look in your school’s alumni network for commercial real estate professionals. Asking alumni to grab a coffee or hop on a quick call with you is a great way for you to express your interest and ask any questions you may have, while forming a connection in the process. However, these alumni are incredibly busy, so be sure to adequately prepare for the chat and behave in a professional manner. And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS follow up the next morning with an email thanking them, even given you thanked them on the phone when you were wrapping up the call.
